Random Acts of Friendly Facts

Image
Lynn and the Surprising Allure of Sculpture My friend Lynn is full of surprises. She is the poster child for ‘never judge a book by its cover’. Every now and then, just when you think you know the girl, she pulls some new an random act that has us all wondering ‘Where did that come from?!’ For example, a few months ago, just after Christmas I introduced my friends to the game cranium. Having played it with my family and having loads of good times, I felt it was only the natural thing to do to get my friends addicted as well. To those who have never played, let me give you the run down. Its your basic, roll the dice, move a certain amount of spaces and reach the end kind of board game. Only the squares are colour coded, and depending on which colour, you have to pick a card from one of four boxes. There is a box for trivia, a box for acting (charades etc.) a box for word twisters, and an artistic skill box (my favorite) I was setting up the games, explaining the different boxes and ho

The Kegger

If there is one truth to being a Graphic Designer, it is that eventually someone close to you, whether it be a member of the family or close friend, will say "Hey! Would you be able to design a (insert project here) for me?" I remember hearing horror stories at my placement about relatives that cant be pleased with the invitations you designed for them, or how there is always the "Thats great... but how would it look if you changed this to blue?" sort of thing. Thankfully I havn't had such an experience, and actually enjoy the small projects that come my way, expecially when they come from my mother. One of such projects was the designing of her birthday invitation. This year, my mother is throwing herself a 'surprise' kegger for her big Five O. So I came up with a few small designs, none of which had the right stuff. So instead, today my mother tells me that she has found a picture on the internet and wants me to photoshop her face into the picture. I j

Being 'done' school, and all that entails, means several things. I have to get ready for grad, look forward to paying off osap, find a job, etc. Some things can wait, (osap plz) others, not so much. While in school, I'm covered by my Dads insurance. Now, with Graduation creeping closer, I'm suddenly reminded of how much some bills will cost. Enter a few quick trips to the doctor, get those shots I'd been meaning to get. Get my glasses persription renewed. See the dentist, which leads to my current pradicament. The dentist tells me that my wisdom teeth are a little crowded back there, and I might want to think about taking them out. Remembering my brother after his wisdom teeth removal (and how expensive it was) I booked in an appointment as soon as possible. I'm sent to an oral surgan who promises me that he'll take good care of me and I wont feel a thing when the nurse whaps me over the head with a frying pan (so save money on anastetic of course) He has a

DONE DONE DONE

Last winter, when we had finished all of our classes at college, my classmates and I celebrated being DONE. Not just done classes for the year, but hopefully for a long time. In our program, in the final year, we had one semester of classes, more of a prep for the workplace rather than conventional classes, and then the second semester we were to find placement at a design firm. 14 weeks as an unpaid intern, gaining experience and contacts. But first, we had to find our placements. So though we were done, we were not DONE DONE. Finding a design firm to take on free labor sounds easy, but when you take into account that the studio would have to give up space to put me, time to train me, and patience to guide around a newbie, add in the fact that the economy was out of control…. Needless to say it was very hard. Eventually I found a placement, and along with my friends, we celebrated being DONE DONE! We had placement, the grades, now all we needed was to survive in our internships for 14

The linguistic divide - The Globe and Mail

This was in the Globe and Mail this morning MARINA JIMÉNEZ From Friday's Globe and Mail April 17, 2009 at 9:04 AM EDT A Botox treatment can mask your age - but the way you speak gives you away. A University of Toronto sociolinguistics professor has discovered that those under 40 are much more likely to use the word "like" when narrating a story, than those over 40. As in "I'm like, 'What are you talking about?' " instead of "I

I MISSED IT!!!!

A thousand curses!!! I missed international Pillow Fight Day!!!! What is International Pillow Fight Day you ask!? Well I didn’t know either a few months ago. I discovered this event through a school project. Determined to find a real Toronto event to make a poster for, and for an interesting subject, I started searching festivals like the winter solstice in Kensington Market or Subway Man Hunting. This search ultimately led me to a video of the IPF. Wikipedia Describes the IPF as such: A pillow fight flash mob is a social phenomenon of flash mobbing and shares many characteristics of a culture jam. The flash mob version of massive pillow fights is distinguished by the fact that nearly all of the promotion is Internet-based. These events occur around the world, some taking the name Pillow Fight Club, a reference to Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk in which anyone could join and fight as long as they fought by the rules. Both the London and Vancouver Pillow Fight Club's rules reflect th

The Card Cruisade

Ok, so work has been slow at placement, as there is only so much that an intern can do on a real project. So to help pass the time and still be productive, I've been working on my own business card design. What do you think?

MUTE

Image
I’ve recently found a new photography blog, and it seems that most of the posts are pictures of Toronto or the surrounding areas. It makes it more interesting because there are a lot of times I check to see what the daily picture is and I see something I’ve seen before, only, I’ve never looked at it that way before. For example. Last week there was a Tamil rally on Front St. I had to walk through some of it to get to my train so I saw some of the actual event. Then today, I saw this post on MUTE…. Its funny how the right lighting, a little black and white and zooming in can totally change how you see something. To see MUTE, here is the link ---> http://mute.rigent.com/index.php

Earth Day

Image
This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming. For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009. This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard. Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks

Here's my Card

Image
An ongoing project of mine is the business card. Firstly, should I have one? For a while there my teachers said no. “You are a student. Don’t make a card until you are an actual Graphic Designer.” Well that title is getting closer and closer and all the little card ideas that spun around my brain before have all gone into hiding. Typical. You always have great ideas for a project you don’t need to work on or a project you have already handed in. So I do what I always do when I need inspiration. I search the web. (coincidentally, depending what I find, this can also leave me with feelings of insignificance) So I found an amazing site that deals with all kinds of design, and even had a section for business cards that stand out. Here are a few of them You can find the actual site here -------> http://www.fubiz.net/galleries/set/business-cards/
